Emergency Preparedness and First Responder Coordination
Preparing Together for the Unexpected
SM Energy operates its pipelines and related facilities in accordance with applicable federal and state safety requirements and established industry practices. These systems are designed, inspected, monitored, and maintained to support safe and reliable operation. However, pipeline emergencies can still occur as a result of third-party excavation damage, equipment or material failure, severe weather, natural events, or other unforeseen circumstances.
SM Energy welcomes fire departments, law enforcement agencies, emergency management organizations, and other first responders serving communities near its pipeline facilities to participate in its emergency liaison and preparedness program. Through liaison meetings, training, drills, and emergency exercises, SM Energy works with responders to improve familiarity with pipeline operations, potential hazards, communication procedures, and appropriate response actions.
Strong coordination before an emergency occurs helps pipeline personnel and first responders work together quickly and effectively to protect lives, secure the affected area, safeguard property, and reduce potential environmental impacts.
